Ancient Romans frequently used snow to chill wine during summer, a practice seen as a sign of wealth and luxury. They collected snow and stored it in deep, insulated pits to keep it, sometimes using specialized strainers called colum nivarium to mix the snow directly into their wine, filtering out impurities while cooling it.
